This is the job

As an Associate Product Owner, you will support the Lead Product Owner in delivering the product roadmap for key roadside applications. This hybrid role combines product ownership support with business systems analysis, ensuring that system changes are well-defined, tested, and aligned with both business needs and technical feasibility. You will act as a subject matter expert (SME) for core systems, contribute to backlog refinement, and work closely with stakeholders across Roadside Operations, COO. This role is ideal for someone looking to grow into a full Product Owner position while delivering tangible value through both strategic and operational contributions.

What will I be doing?

  • Product Ownership Support Collaborate with the Lead Product Owner to define and maintain the product backlog.
  • Translate business needs into clear, prioritised user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Write detailed user stories, use cases, and acceptance criteria that clearly communicate requirements to development teams.
  • Manage and enhance the selected product line, driving innovation and continuous improvement to align with business objectives.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and support delivery squads with context and clarification.
  • Contribute to roadmap planning by identifying opportunities for incremental improvements.
  • Act as a systems SME for Road IT platforms (e.g. AAHelp2, Prime). Stakeholder Engagement Serve as a key liaison between Roadside Operations, IT, and Engineering.
  • Support defect triage and prioritisation, ensuring timely resolution of issues. Communicate release notes, known issues, and workarounds to business users.
  • Product Backlog Management Assist in creating, refining, and prioritising the product backlog in alignment with business objectives and Technological priorities (Product Health) Ensure backlog items are ready for development through grooming sessions and stakeholder reviews.
  • Agile Delivery Support Participate actively in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Track sprint progress and escalate blockers or risks to the Product Owner.
  • Support the Product Owner in making trade-off decisions and prioritising features based on value, effort, and risk. Coordinate with Scrum Masters and Lead Engineers to ensure smooth execution.
  • Support the preparation and facilitation of PI Planning where appropriate Product Strategy & Roadmap Support the Product Owner in developing and maintaining the product roadmap.
  • Assist in defining KPIs and success metrics for product features and releases. Quality Assurance & Testing Collaborate with QA teams to validate that delivered features meet acceptance criteria and business expectations.
  • Support pre-live and functionality testing, including manual UAT (User Acceptable Testing) and regression testing whilst also supporting defect triage and resolution.
  • Liaise with development and testing teams to ensure requirements are met and defects are resolved.
  • Documentation & Reporting Maintain comprehensive documentation of product features, decisions, and processes.
  • Generate reports and dashboards to track product performance and team velocity.
  • Document lessons learned and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives

What do I need?

  • Experience in business analysis, product ownership, or systems testing within an Agile environment.
  • Strong understanding of Roadside Operations and legacy systems (e.g. AAHelp2).
  • Familiarity with backlog management tools (e.g. JIRA, Azure DevOps).
  • Ability to write clear user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently and managing multiple priorities.
  • ITIL Foundation (advantageous). ISTQB / ASTQB / BCS Certificates in Software Testing (advantageous).
  • The ability to manage a number of demanding priorities.
  • This role requires a tenacious, problem-solver and trouble-shooter with a high attention to detail.
  • They should be energetic, resilient, honest and open with others and self-motivating, with the ability to work independently and able to demonstrate good business thinking.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills are crucial, as are excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • He/she should be able to manage a complex workload with a welcoming and ‘can do’ attitude, be highly organised and possess the ability to work on multiple initiatives at any one time.
